This programme offers a fresh change of environment to caregivers who may have long been attending support groups held in more formal settings such as dementia day care centres, while encouraging the interaction and bonding between the person living with dementia and family members. Ultimately, it provides an avenue for persons living with dementia and caregivers to have respite and enjoy themselves despite dementia.

The concept of Memories Café was originated from Dr Bere Miesen’s “Alzheimer’s Café” in 1997 in the Netherlands. Dr Miesen’s initiative aims to provide a normalised café setting for persons living with dementia with the following objectives:

  • To minimise social stigma on persons living with dementia and to encourage social acceptance through the engagements in a café within a community setting.
  • To provide an alternative platform for social interactions and respite to persons living with dementia and their caregivers, moving away from long-term care environment and their homes.
  • With organised activities for persons living with dementia and their caregivers, Memories Café aims to improve their interaction and bonding with each other.

The Memories Café programme, modelled after the Alzheimer’s Café, was successfully piloted in early 2014. The responses garnered from the two pilot sessions were overwhelming, which spurred Dementia Singapore to include this programme as part of its regular programme for its beneficiaries. The programme remains very popular and fully enrolled at almost every session.

  1. Understand the fundamental of Humanitude™ care methodology, relational techniques, and positive impacts on the quality of life.
  2. Gain basic knowledge of dementia and the root causes of challenging behaviours linked to the loss of Humanitude bonds.
  3. Learn to approach, communicate, and engage with older persons before, during, and after care/ADLs using clear steps to build positive connections, improving cooperation, self-care, and participation.
  4. Apply the 5-staged Sensory Capture™ and the 4 pillars—Gaze, Speech, Touch, Verticality.
  5. Recognise behavioural triggers and apply Humanitude strategies to manage them.
  6. Practice basic Relational Handling™ techniques for standing, walking, and transfers while supporting dignity, autonomy, and mobility.
  7. Develop a simple care action plan to ensure Humanitude™ care continuity.

Caregiver Mastery is a uniquely curated empowerment initiative for caregivers of persons with mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Caregiver Mastery aims to do this by supporting caregivers through knowledge-sharing, dyadic engagement and self-care.

Over monthly sessions, caregivers come together to share, grow and bond with themselves and others through a variety of practices such as mindfulness and creative initiatives such as art, music and nature-inspired engagements. Our sessions are designed with attention to self-care, confidence building and sense-of-self, all while providing opportunities for caregivers to journey together and receive peer support from each other. The programme hopes to support caregivers in journeying with their loved ones and embracing caregiving not as a burden, but as a gift. As our caregivers progress from empowerment to mastery, further growth opportunities are provided for them to take on co-facilitator or mentor roles; eventually building a space for caregivers, by caregivers.

The objectives of this initiative are to create a community of empowered caregivers moving toward achieving mastery through:

  • Enthusing caregivers to be actively involved in ensuring PMCIs/PWDs live well at home and in the community
  • Empowering caregivers to be capable and confident in caregiving of PMCIs/PWDs
  • Empowering caregivers to learn and bond together through their own lived and shared experiences
  • Enhancing PMCI/PWD & caregivers’ sense of self, confidence and well-being (healthy physical, mental and emotional state)
